Qatar, Italy Discuss Stronger Defence, Investment Ties, Libya Developments

DOHA, Qatar, April 4 (NNN-QNA) – The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, discussed with visiting Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, defence, economic and investment ties, according to a royal court statement.

“The Emir held an official session of talks with Italy’s Prime Minister Conte, and took up regional and international issues of mutual interest, particularly developments in Libya,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, Italian media quoted Conte as saying, after meeting with Sheikh Tamim that, Italy and Qatar see eye to eye on the need to realise stability in the north African region, namely Libya.

An Italian government statement noted that Conte, in addition to the official meetings, will visit the National Museum of Qatar and the Doha new DECC Metro Station, built by Italian infrastructure company, Salini Impregilo.

Conte said, he also discussed with Sheikh Tamim some pressing diplomatic issues, like developments in Algeria and Tunisia.

Conte will also inaugurate the new headquarters of the Italian embassy and announce the formation of a local committee under the name Societa Dante Alighieri, an Italian non-profit organisation whose goal is to foster the diffusion of the Italian culture and language abroad.

Conte’s visit was preceded by Italian Defence Minister, Elisabetta Trenta’s visit late last month, where she had talks with Qatari military officials, to discuss means to strengthen defence cooperation.– NNN-QNA
