Singapore contributes US$50,000 humanitarian aid for Afghanistan earthquake victims

SINGAPORE, June 24 (NNN-Bernama) — Singapore will contribute US$50,000 as seed money to support the Singapore Red Cross’ public fundraising efforts towards the humanitarian crisis caused by the earthquake in Afghanistan on June 22.

According to the republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the contribution will supplement the Singapore Red Cross’ commitment of S$50,000 for urgently-needed medical supplies and other basic necessities.

“Singapore conveys our deepest condolence to the families of the victims of the earthquake,” the ministry added in a statement issued here Friday.

It was reported that the death toll from the powerful earthquake that rocked  Afghanistan has climbed to 1,000 people, with more than 1,500 others injured.

Paktika and Khost are the most affected provinces of the country where hundreds of houses were destroyed by the 6.1 magnitude earthquake.

Taliban officials have also reportedly requested immediate assistance for the quake-hit areas.
