RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, April 3 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – The Rio de Janeiro City Council, voted, to open an impeachment process against the city’s mayor, Marcelo Crivella.
Crivella has allegedly favoured private companies, in contracts with the city government, without due bidding processes.
Thirty-five councillors voted for opening the impeachment, while 14 voted against. Head of the City Council, Jorge Felippe, abstained, as he is in the line of succession for the mayoral position.
Crivella will continue as acting mayor during the impeachment process, unlike what’s for the presidential impeachment in Brazil, when the presidency will be suspended.
A commission appointed by the City Council will work out in 90 days, a report for council members to vote on. If Crivella is impeached, the head of the council will take office and call an election for a new mayor.– NNN-PRENSA LATINA
