KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, April 3 (NNN-BERNAMA) – An application by the defence to challenge the validity of charges against former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was dismissed by the High Court today and the much-anticipated trial continued.
Najib has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In his opening statement, Attorney General Tommy Thomas said the prosecution will rely on direct and circumstantial evidence, both oral and documented to prove Najib’s guilt.
He said the prosecution will prove that Najib has received RM42 million graft deposited to his personal account.
Evidence will show that Najib’s credit card was charged USD130,625 for expenses made at high-end boutique in Honolulu, he said.
Prosecution will also establish that Najib engaged in money laundering activities by receiving RM42 milion, Tommy Thomas said.
Najib, 66, the sixth prime minister of Malaysia, is the first (prime minister) to find himself in the dock of a court.
The much-awaited high profile trial is being heard before Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali.
Najib is facing three counts of criminal breach of trust, one charge of abusing his position and three counts of money laundering, over SRC International Sdn Bhd funds amounting to RM42 million.
