Indian Gov’t Unveils New Recruitment Policy For Armed Forces

NEW DELHI, Jun 15 (NNN-PTI) – The Indian government, yesterday, unveiled a new recruitment scheme for the armed forces, aimed at cutting down salary and pension bills.

The scheme, called Agnipath (path of fire), aims to recruit soldiers in the army, the navy and the air force, largely on a short-term contractual basis.

Under the scheme, which was announced by Indian Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, about 45,000 people between the ages of 17.5 years and 21 years, will be inducted into the services for a four-year tenure.

After four years, only 25 percent of these soldiers will be retained and join the regular cadre and go on to serve for a full 15 years, in non-officer ranks. The remaining will have to exit the services.– NNN-PTI
