100 Militants Killed In Gunfights Across Indian-Controlled Kashmir Since Jan 1

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Jun 14 (NNN-PTI) – Since the beginning of this year, government forces have killed 100 militants, in gunfights across restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said yesterday.

A brief statement issued by the police said that, “100 militants were killed in different gunfights in five months and 12 days this year.”

According to police, the count was double the number of militants killed during the same period last year.

On Sunday, police said, they killed four militants in two different gunfights in the region. While one militant was gunned down in Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, three others were killed in the southern Pulwama district.

According to the police, most of these gunfights were carried out on prior specific intelligence information, suggesting the presence of militants.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.– NNN-PTI
