KABUL, Jun 11 (NNN-ANA) – Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, produced 700 tonnes of honey, so far, this year, 200 tonnes more than the total in the previous year, the state-run Bakhtar news agency reported yesterday.
“Bee farm owners harvested 700 tonnes of honey, so far, this year, in Nangarhar, while total honey produced in the province last year was only 500 tonnes,” the news agency quoted the bee farms union’s chief, Riaz Mohammad Rodwal, as saying.
There are 650 bee farms in the province, and bee keeping industry has provided jobs for thousands of individuals there, according to the news agency.
Rodwal said, one kg honey produced in Nangarhar costs 500 afghani (one U.S. dollar equals 88 afghani) to 1,500 afghani, depending on its quality.
Bee keeping industry has been on the rise in Afghanistan over the past few years, and the war-torn country has almost achieved self-sufficiency in producing honey, the report said.– NNN-ANA
