India Meteorological Department Issues Orange Alert For Heatwave In The North

NEW DELHI, Jun 8 (NNN-PTI) – India Meteorological Department (IMD), yesterday issued an orange alert, for some of the northern parts of the country, over a heatwave condition, India’s state-run broadcaster – All India Radio (AIR) said.

“North Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Bundelkhand region, will experience heatwave conditions, where the temperature will vary between 44 degrees Celsius and 47 degrees Celsius,” the broadcaster quoted senior scientist in IMD, R K Jenamani, as having said.

IMD uses four colour codes for weather warnings – green (no action needed), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared) and red (take action).

For the plains, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature goes up to 40 degrees Celsius or more, and is at least 4.5 degrees above normal. IMD officials say, a severe heatwave is declared, if the maximum temperature crosses the 47-degree Celsius mark.

Delhi has been experiencing a spell of heatwave in the last two days. On Sunday, the maximum temperature settled at 46.4 degrees Celsius, five notches above normal.

People have been advised to take all precautions while venturing out, like covering the body with cotton cloths and drinking plenty of water.

The average maximum temperature in Apr for north, west and central India was the highest in 122 years. The country had also witnessed the hottest Mar in 122 years.– NNN-PTI
