India’s Sugar Export Ban Comes Into Effect

NEW DELHI, Jun 2 (NNN-PTI) – The Indian government’s sugar exports ban came into effect yesterday, officials said.

The ban will be in place until the end of Oct.

Last week the government decided to put a cap on sugar exports to ensure domestic availability.

“Export of sugar (raw, refined and white sugar) is placed under restricted category from June 1, 2022, onwards,” said a notification, issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

However, the notification said, with effect from June 1 until Oct 31, or until further orders, the export of sugar will be allowed with specific permission.

Reports said, the decision has been taken in view of the global situation, which may trigger the demand for sugar.

The ban came days after the government prohibited wheat exports, as part of its steps to control the increase in prices at home.

India is the largest producer of sugar in the world, but also consumes most of what it produces. It is the second largest exporter of sugar after Brazil.– NNN-PTI
