Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced in north-east Nigeria
ABUJA, May 24 (NNN-Xinhua) — A Nigerian official said that extremist groups terrorizing the country for over a decade have been dislodged from their strong base in the northeast region under the fierce offensive operations by security forces.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, Minister of Police Affairs Maigari Dingyadi said that the extremist groups, including the Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province(ISWAP), have been engaging in hit-and-run guerrilla tactics after troops with police support degraded their capability and dislodged them from their strong base in the northeast.
“They are now going back into the cocoons, engaging in hit-and-run guerrilla tactics,” said Dingyadi.
However, Dingyadi admitted a new challenge that some Boko Haram and ISWAP affiliated groups are now collaborating with bandits operating in the northwest and parts of north-central Nigeria.
“This ugly trend is currently receiving commensurate attention with the deployment of operational assets to neutralize the menace,” said Dingyadi.
