One killed, 50 injured in Germany tornado

FRANKFURT (Germany), May 22 (NNN-EFE) — At least one person died and 50 others were injured after a tornado hit Germany, authorities said Saturday.

Police in the city of Paderborn in North Rhine-Westphalia, one of the worst hit areas, said that 30 people required hospital treatment, including 10 who were in a serious condition. One woman’s life was in danger.

In northern Bavaria, 14 people, including several children, were injured when a wooden cabin where they were sheltering from the storm in collapsed.

In the western city of Wittgert, a 38-year-old man lost his life after being electrocuted in a flooded basement, according to local media.

Storm Emmelinde’s high winds, which began on Friday, were expected to continue into Saturday, a Paderborn police statement said, which urged residents in the areas affected to stay indoors “for their own safety.”

“The wind keeps picking up and there are still many unsecured danger spots,” police said.

Parks in the city were closed, while “roofs have been torn off” warehouses in industrial estates.

“Sheet metal, insulation and other materials have flown for kilometers,” while “countless roofs are covered or badly damaged,” Paderborn police said, adding that many uprooted trees had destroyed cars and other structures. — NNN-EFE
