MEXICO CITY, April 1 (NNN-TRELESUR) — Human rights defender Abiram Hernandez Fernandez was found dead in his home in Zalapa, Veracruz Saturday morning, Mexican police officials reported.
Police say the 37-year-old activist was found in his living room and died from a cranioencephalic trauma after suffering a severe blow to the head.
Hernandez worked tirelessly as a lawyer and sociologist, donating his time to missing persons cases in the region.
As part of the Xalapa Peace Collective and the coordinator of the Heriberto Jara Municipal Services Center, the activist lead numerous protests criticizing the governments of Javier Duarte de Ochoa (2010-2016) and Miguel Ángel Yunes Linares (2016-2018) and advocating the rights of families disappeared victims.
On Twitter, rights organizations, like Colectivo Solecito, demanded justice for his death, writing:
“Abiram, your crime will not go unpunished, we who supported you and with whom you were always understanding, dedicated, supportive, we will not give up in the struggle because justice is done. Rest in peace, you take our love and immense gratitude to your family our regret.”
