KATHMANDU, Apr 20 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sagar Sunar, a Nepali man who is 1.13 metres tall, headed towards Mt. Qomolangma yesterday, as he aims to become the shortest climber ever to reach the top of the world’s tallest peak.
“The 28-year-old climber departed for the mountain, right after getting a climbing permit from Nepal’s Department of Tourism yesterday,” Aditya Bhusal, director of Himalayan Shepherds Eco Trek and Expedition, which is organising Sunar’s expedition, told Xinhua.
“If Sunar succeeds in his attempt, he will become the shortest person ever to reach the top of Mt. Qomolangma,” added Bhusal.
Sunar lives in the Kaski district in western Nepal.
Bhishma Raj Bhattarai, an officer at the mountaineering section of the Tourism Department, noted that, the department does not have any record of any other person having climbed the 8,848.86-metre-high Mt. Qomolangma as the shortest person.
Before setting out for Mt. Qomolangma, Sunar has climbed Ramdung Peak (5,925m) in the Rolwaling region of the Himalayas.
By yesterday, Nepal’s Tourism Department had issued climbing permits for 287 climbers to summit Mt. Qomolangma, the agency said in a press statement.– NNN-XINHUA
