Timor Leste Holds Final Round Of Presidential Election

JAKARTA, Apr 20 (NNN-ANTARA) – Asia’s youngest nation, Timor Leste, held its second and final round of the presidential election yesterday, contesting Nobel laureate Jose Ramos-Horta and incumbent Fransisco Guterres, according to local media.

The country of 1.3 million people, currently has around 860,000 eligible voters, to cast their ballots.

In the first round of the poll last month, Ramos-Horta received 46.5 percent of votes, leading over Guterres who garnered 22.1 percent, according to data from the country’s Election Secretariat.

Ramos-Horta, who is one of Timor Leste’s founding fathers and the country’s former president, is backed by the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) Party.

Meanwhile, Guterres is endorsed by the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin) Party.
