Lightning, Storms Killed 14 In India’s Assam, Also Killed 18 Elephants

NEW DELHI, Apr 18 (NNN-PTI) – At least 14 people were killed and many others injured, after heavy rains, lightning and storms lashed India’s north-eastern state of Assam, officials said, yesterday.

“Eight people were killed on Friday and six deaths were reported on Saturday,” said an official at Assam State Disaster Management Authority.

The storms left behind a trail of destruction, including damaged houses, uprooted trees and electric poles, and snapped electric lines.

Officials said, electricity distribution has been affected to a large extent.

People have sought refuge in government offices and school buildings, in the affected areas, local media reported.

According to official data, a total of 41,350 people in 1,037 villages in the state, have been affected.

Meanwhile, India Metrological Department predicted rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms or lightning in the country’s north-east in the next five days.– NNN-PTI
