NEW DELHI, Apr 8 (NNN-PTI) – Women comprise only 16.6 percent of the total workforce in research and development, in various science and technology organisations across India, said the federal Minister of Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, in parliament yesterday.
The minister said, there are 56,747 women scientists, directly engaged in research and development activities, out of a total of 342,000 personnel at various research and development establishments, quoting the latest report on Research and Development Statistics of the “National Science and Technology Management Information System (NSTMIS)” of the Department of Science and Technology.
He also stated that, there are 162 women working in the Department of Science and Technology (DST), 1,477 in the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and 1,875 women in Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which are the institutions under the federal Ministry of Science and Technology.
According to the minister, the federal government has launched various programmes and schemes over the past couple of years, in a bid to increase women’s participation in research and development.– NNN-PTI
