Nepal Issues First Climbing Permit For Mt. Qomolangma

KATHMANDU, Mar 29 (NNN-XINHUA) – Nepal’s Department of Tourism, issued the first climbing permit for the expedition of the world’s tallest Mt. Qomolangma, in the spring season, the department said yesterday.

A nine-member team, comprising of U.S., Australian and Canadian climbers, received the permit on Sunday, for climbing the 8,848.86-metre-high Mt. Qomolangma, that straddles Nepal and China, the department said in a statement.

Apr to May is the main season to summit the Himalayan mountains inside Nepal, in particular Mt. Qomolangma.

“Two more teams are expected to receive climbing permits today,” Bhisma Raj Bhattarai, a section officer at the mountaineering section of the department, told Xinhua.

The department was expecting over 300 climbers to receive climbing permits for Mt. Qomolangma in spring, said Bhattarai. “After the Russia-Ukraine war, our expectation is that, there won’t be more than 250 expedition members to receive permits,” he added.

In spring last year, a record high of 408 climbing permits were issued for climbing Mt. Qomolangma from the Nepali side, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.– NNN-XINHUA
