KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 (NNN-Bernama) — The number of new COVID-19 daily cases in Malaysia dropped below the 20,000 mark Sunday when 16,863 cases were recorded compared with 20,923 on Saturday, said Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
Meanwhile, the number of recoveries continued to surpass new infections as 26,171 cases were recorded bringing the cumulative number of recovered cases in Malaysia to 3,870,937.
According to Dr Noor Hisham, of the new cases recorded yesterday, 850 were admitted to hospitals and 362 cases or 42.6 per cent involved categories 3, 4, and 5, while 488 cases or 57.4 per cent were in categories 1 and 2.
Categories one and two refer to COVID-19 patients with no or mild symptoms while category three is patients with pneumonia, category four needs oxygen assistance and category five requires respiratory assistance.
Two states registered COVID-19 critical or intensive care unit (ICU) bed occupancy of over 50 per cent, with Kuala Lumpur the highest at 63 per cent and Selangor at 52 per cent and 187 cases required ventilator support.
However he said, no state registered over 50 per cent bed usage at the Low Risk Quarantine and Treatment Centres.
The national COVID-19 infectivity rate or Rt value on Sunday was 0.93.
