Jordan Plans To Use Sludge To Generate Power

AMMAN, Mar 1 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordan’s Water Minister, Mohammad Najjar said yesterday, the country is looking into using treated sludge to generate electricity and would launch power projects at sewage treatment plants.

The minister said, the plans are part of efforts to increase reliance on renewables and boost energy efficiency.

He made the remarks at a workshop, dedicated to discussing a project designed to improve energy efficiency and use in Jordanian wastewater treatment stations.

The 69-million euros project, which targets 10 sewage treatment plants across the country, entails the introduction of an anaerobic sludge digestion system, to produce biogas and generate energy, using electric and thermoelectric generators by 2040, Bashar Batayneh, secretary-general of the Water Authority of Jordan, said.

A relevant economic feasibility study would be carried out, in cooperation with local and international consultants, and the necessary designs for the project would be developed according to international and public-safety standards.– NNN-PETRA
