TOKYO, Feb 22 (NNN-NHK) – A magnitude 5.6 earthquake near Naha, Naha Shi, Okinawa, Japan, was reported early this morning, by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies, that monitor seismic activity worldwide.
The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicentre, at 5:52 am local time.
The exact magnitude, epicentre, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours, as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
“Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2,” GFZ reported.
A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration, in the area of the epicentre.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Naha (pop. 300,800), located 135 km from the epicentre, and Tomigusuku (pop. 55,700) 137 km away.– NNN-NHK
