NEW DELHI, Feb 10 (NNN-PTI) – Rescuers from the Indian army yesterday pulled to safety, an injured trekker who was trapped without food and water for over 48 hours, in a crevice of a hill in the southern Indian state of Kerala, officials said.
According to officials, 23-year-old R. Babu, slipped during a trekking expedition and fell into the crevice on Monday. Following the fall, Babu got trapped in between the steep rocks and could not make any headway.
He was accompanied by his two friends who had already given up the effort to reach the hilltop.
After failing to help Babu move from the crevice, his friends sought help from the police, who later alerted army teams.
Reports said, helicopters were called in on Tuesday that made sorties to reach him but failed because of the topography of the terrain and a heavy downdraft.
Finally, the Indian army rescuers pulled him to safety yesterday morning.
“In a spectacular action, highly qualified teams of the Indian army successfully rescued Babu, who slipped off a cliff and was stranded in a steep gorge for over 48 hours,” said a statement issued by Indian army’s southern command.
Following his rescue, Babu, dressed in T-shirt and shorts, was seen pictured with smiling army personnel.– NNN-PTI
