NEW DELHI, Jan 14 (NNN-Bernama) — At least five people were killed and dozens injured in a train crash in India’s West Bengal state on Thursday.
Twelve coaches of the Guwahati-Bikaner Express train derailed near Maynaguri town in the Jalpaiguri district.
Senior government officials were at the crash site to supervise rescue and relief operations, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said.
The train was travelling from Patna in Bihar to Guwahati in the northeastern state of Assam, according to local media.
“We felt a sudden shock. We were all rocking violently and luggage kept on upper berths tumbled all around,” one survivor said.
Visuals from the accident site showed damaged coaches and crowds of distraught passengers and locals.
“Personally monitoring the situation for swift rescue operations,” Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a tweet.
