KAMPALA, Jan 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least seven traders were killed and scores injured in an accident that occurred in Agali sub-county, Lira district.

The seven were killed when a truck they were traveling aboard with over 50 other market vendors and their merchandise, overturned at Piiawac along Abako-Lira road at around 8 pm Monday on their way from Ajuri market in Alebtong district.

Eyewitnesses say the truck driver lost control when he tried to overtake another vehicle. The deceased include 2 females and 5 males who died on the spot. Over 20 other people aboard the truck including the driver identified as Jasper Odongo were rushed to Lira Regional Referral hospital with injuries.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga police spokesperson, blamed the accident on overloading, reckless driving, and speeding.

Meanwhile in NAMIBIA, three people were injured after a bus and a sedan crashed into a truck along the B1 road at Omutsegonime village in the Oshikoto regiod on Tuesday morning.

Deputy commissioner of the Oshikoto police Petrus Shigwedha, says the two vehicles hit a truck that was stranded across the road at the time.

The truck was stuck on the road after its driver Petrus Shailemo (44) stopped and attempted to make a U-turn, in order to retrieve his spare wheel which had fallen off the truck.

The bus driver and the three occupants in the bus did not sustained any injuries, says Shigwedha.

The driver of the sedan that also hit the truck, was however seriously injured, while his two passenger sustained only slight injuries. Both were taken to the Omuthiya District Hospital. — NNN-AGENCIES
