UK virus cases top 106,000 in record

LONDON, Dec 24 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The UK government reported 106,122 new virus cases in the last 24 hours, the first time the daily figure has topped 100,000, as the Omicron variant spreads rapidly.

The UK is one of Europe’s most affected by the virus with 147,573 deaths since the pandemic began and more than 11 million positive cases.

The government is urging the public to get third vaccine jabs and more than 30 million have received boosters so far.

The government also said 140 more people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.

The first six-figure total came just hours after experts said children aged five to 11 who are in a clinical risk group or who are a household contact of someone who is immunosuppressed, should be offered a Covid vaccine.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) ruled out immediately advising jabs for that age group.

It comes as a record 968,665 booster and third doses of were reported in the UK on Tuesday, beating the previous record of 940,606 doses on Saturday.

More than 30.8 million booster and third doses have now been delivered in the UK, with 6.1 million in the past seven days. — NNN-AGENCIES
