EU missions call for upholding status quo at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque

JERUSALEM, March 22 (NNN-WAFA) – After meeting with members of the Islamic Waqf Council in Jerusalem for a briefing about recent developments at Al-Aqsa Mosque (Al-Haram al-Sharif) compound, European Union (EU) Heads of Mission in Jerusalem and Ramallah called for upholding the status quo at the holy site.

The EU Heads of Mission said in a statement that they were concerned about the recent developments and violent clashes at the Haram al-Sharif.

“The EU reiterates the importance of upholding the Status Quo for the holy sites in Jerusalem, including with regard to Jordan’s special role. Any unilateral attempt to change the Status Quo could have deeply destabilizing effects.”

They called “on all actors on the ground and in the wider region to show calm and restraint in order to prevent any escalation, and to work towards restoring the dignity and safety of this holy site.”

The situation has been tense at the Muslim holy site following intrusions by Jewish fanatic groups who try to alter the long-standing status quo at the Mosque and turn part of it, mainly Bab al-Rahma prayer area, into a Jewish temple, something strongly opposed by Muslims and the Palestinians in general. — NNN-WAFA
