UN chief saddened by loss of lives in Iraq’s ferry accident

UNITED NATIONS, March 22 (NNN-Xinhua) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was saddened by the tragic loss of lives after a passenger ferry capsized in the Tigris River near the Iraqi city of Mosul.

“The secretary-general extends his condolences to the families of the victims, the government and people of Iraq wishes the injured a speedy recovery,” said a press note issued by the secretary-general’s office.

The secretary-general conveyed the UN’s solidarity with the Republic of Iraq as well as its readiness to support national assistance efforts as needed, it added.

An overcrowded ferry capsized in the Tigris River near Mosul, killing at least 92 people during Nowruz and Mother’s Day celebrations on Thursday. At least 12 children were among those killed, reports said. — NNN-XINHUA
