SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Dec 11 (NNN-PTI) – Two policemen were killed yesterday, in a militant attack, in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The attack was carried out at Bandipora town, about 55 km north of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
“This evening (last night), militants fired upon a police party at Gulshan Chowk, in the main town of Bandipora, following which two policemen were wounded,” a police official said. “Though they were immediately removed to hospital, the duo succumbed on the way and were declared brought dead by health officials.”
Following the attack contingents of police, paramilitary and army rushed to the spot to carry out searches for the attackers.
Eyewitnesses said, no sooner had the attack took place, people were seen running away from the spot, to save themselves from being caught in the crossfire.
On Wednesday police claimed it killed three militants in a gunfight, in the southern Shopian district.
A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region, since 1989.
Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.– NNN-PTI
