COLOMBO, Nov 20 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sri Lanka’s health officials said yesterday that, another sub-lineage of the COVID-19 Delta variant had been detected in the country, named as B.1.617.2.104.
Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine, at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, told the media that, this new variant was in addition to the B.1.617.2.28 sub-lineage of the Delta, which was detected in the country, earlier in Sept.
So far, two sub-lineages of the Delta variant have originated in Sri Lanka, health experts said.
Sri Lanka has to date detected 554,459 positive COVID-19 patients, since Mar last year and recorded 14,072 deaths.– NNN-XINHUA
