COLOMBO, Nov 17 (NNN-XINHUA) – Health experts in Sri Lanka warned of a dengue outbreak, due to rains, which caused floods in several areas, local media reported yesterday.
According to official figures, a total of 1,361 positive dengue patients have been reported within the first 10 days of Nov.
Community physician at the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Shilanthi Seneviratne was quoted by local media as saying, there were only 770 positive patients for the entire month of Nov last year, but this year it surpassed the 1,000 mark within just 10 days of this month.
This showed the gravity of the epidemic this year, Seneviratne said.
She said, the present heavy rains and floods have created more room for mosquito breeding.
According to official figures, a considerable number of cases had been detected from the capital, Colombo and Batticaloa in the Eastern Province.
Medical experts urged the public to seek immediate medical service, if they suffer high fever, uncontrolled vomiting, abdominal pain, or dizziness among other symptoms of dengue fever.– NNN-XINHUA
