DAR ES SALAAM, Nov 11 (NNN-IRIN) – Tanzanian game rangers seized 380 snares, set by poachers, in the Nyerere National Park, to catch wild animals for bush meat, a senior official said yesterday.
Damas Ndumbaro, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, said, the snares are being used to kill wild animals in a new wave of poaching for bush meat.
“Poachers are now engaged in the use of snares to catch wild animals for bush meat, after the government succeeded in ending commercial poaching, which targeted elephants and rhinos,” Ndumbaro said in a statement, issued by his ministry.
He said, the 380 snares were seized by the game rangers in a de-snaring operation, financed by the German government.
The minister said, the game rangers also found a giraffe and two antelopes killed, after they were caught by the snares.
Ndumbaro said, the government will leave no stone unturned, in the fight against the new wave of poaching, that targeted wild animals for bush meat.– NNN-IRIN
