One Killed, Hundreds Injured In “Fire Festival” Celebrations In Iran

TEHRAN, Iran, March 20 (NNN-IRNA) – At least one person was killed in the nationwide “fire festival” in Iran, on Tuesday, state IRINN TV reported.

In the celebrations of Chaharshanbe Suri, or the fire festival, 750 people have also been injured, so far.

Besides, 69 people were amputated, due to the severe injuries, according to the report.

The turn of year, according to the Iranian calendar, falls on March 21 (tomorrow), which also marks the beginning of spring in the country.

The fire festival, a 4,000-year Persian tradition, is celebrated by Iranians on the eve of the last Wednesday before Nowruz (the Iranian new year).

On Tuesday evening, Iranians celebrated the fire festival by jumping over bonfires and using firecrackers in public places.
