SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Oct 24 (NNN-PTI) – Three members of a nomadic family were killed and one was critically injured yesterday, after a landslide hit their makeshift tent, in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.
The landslide, triggered by incessant rains, hit the family at village Noorpora of Tral, in Pulwama district, about 45 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
“Three members of a family were killed and one person was rescued in critical condition, after they got buried under mounds of soil that drifted close to their makeshift tent,” a disaster management official said.
“The injured person was immediately taken to the nearest medical facility, but later referred to Srinagar in a critical condition,” the official added.
Following the incident, locals informed the police and launched a massive rescue operation. Earthmover was brought to the spot, to retrieve the bodies.
Since Friday night, heavy rains have been incessantly going on across the plains of the region, and higher reaches have experienced snowfall.
The heavy rainfall triggered landslides on the Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only road linking Kashmir to the outside world, following which, authorities ordered the suspension of traffic.
Rains and snow caused a lot of damage to the fruit-laden trees inside orchards, officials said.
According to the region’s meteorological department officials, the rainfall is expected to continue during the next 24 hours.– NNN-PTI
