Road Accident Kills Nine In India’s Haryana State

NEW DELHI, Oct 23 (NNN-PTI) – At least nine people were killed and several others injured yesterday, in a road accident involving four vehicles in the northern Indian state of Haryana.

The accident took place near Bahadurgarh town, in Jhajjar district, about 279 km south of Chandigarh, the capital city of Haryana.

“During the wee hours today, on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal expressway, near Bahadurgarh town, nine people were killed and several others injured in a road accident, involving four vehicles,” a police official said.

“First a car carrying 11 people was hit by a goods truck from behind, during which eight occupants were killed and three others injured. Later on, another car carrying seven people stopped there to find out about the accident, it was also hit by another truck from behind, after which one occupant inside the car was killed and some others injured.”

The injured were immediately shifted to nearest hospital.

Police registered a case and ordered an investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Preliminary investigations revealed the trucks were being driven at high speed, police said.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often due to overloading, poor condition of roads and reckless driving.

Around 150,000 people are killed every year in around half a million road accidents across India, officials said.

India’s federal minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently said, the government set a target to reduce road accident deaths by 50 percent by 2024.– NNN-PTI
