ULAN BATOR, Oct 21 (NNN-XINHUA) – The Mongolian government yesterday approved a resolution on developing universities in rural areas, in order to decentralise the national capital city.
“We believe that the development of universities in rural areas will be a viable solution, to reduce traffic jams in the capital city, enhance human resources in rural areas and promote rural development,” Luvsantseren Enkh-Amgalan, minister of education and science, said.
In line with the resolution, Mongolia is expected to establish schools affiliated to the National University of Mongolia, the Mongolian University of Science and Technology and the Mongolian University of Agriculture, in the provinces of Orkhon, Darkhan-Uul and Umnugovi, in the near future, as academic, research and industrial complexes.
Currently, there are around 150,000 students studying in 88 universities in Mongolia, and 143,000 of them are studying in Ulan Bator, the capital of the country, which is home to over half of the country’s population of around 3.4 million.
Traffic jams and air pollution caused by urbanisation have become pressing issues in Ulan Bator.– NNN-XINHUA
