UNITED NATIONS, March 18 (NNN-Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is saddened by the loss of life, destruction of property and displacement of people in Zimbabwe due to the heavy rains and flooding caused by tropical cyclone Idai, his spokesman said.

Guterres extended his condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and the government of Zimbabwe, said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman, in a statement.

The world body expresses its solidarity with the Zimbabwean authorities and stands ready to work with them as they respond to the humanitarian needs resulting from this disaster, said the statement.

Cyclone Idai has left at least 150 people dead in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, with hundreds more missing.

Guterres’ spokesman issued similar statements on Malawi and Mozambique separately on Monday and Friday. — NNN-XINHUA
