Earthquake In Indonesia Triggers No Tsunami

JAKARTA, Oct 12 (NNN-ANTARA) – An earthquake that hit Bitung city, in Indonesia’s eastern province of North Sulawesi, was recorded at 5.7 magnitude, triggering no tsunami, the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said, yesterday.

The epicentre of the shallow quake was located 122 km to the south-east of Bitung, the agency said, adding that, the quake occurred at 7:34 p.m. local time last night, due to an activity of a plate in the Maluku Sea.

“Results of an analysis of the source mechanism show that, the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism,” the agency’s head of earthquake and tsunami centre, Bambang Setiyo Prayitno said, in a statement.

So far, there have been no reports of damages caused by the earthquake, he added.

As of 8:06 a.m. local time, there had been two aftershocks, said the official.– NNN-ANTARA
