Kenya: Three fishermen killed after boat capsizes in Lake Victoria, 2 rescued

NAIROBI, Oct 11 (NNN-KBC) — Three Kenyan fishermen have died while two others have been rescued after their boat capsized at Nyagina beach near Mbita causeway in Suba North constituency, Homa Bay County.

The men were on their routine fishing expedition when the accident occurred.

Confirming the incident, Mbita Sub County Police Commander Stanley Atavachi said two fishermen swam to safety in the 1 am incident.

Atavachi says that the fishermen encountered strong wind when they were about to cross the causeway on their way to Koguna beach causing the boat to capsize.

He added that efforts are underway to retrieve the bodies.

The incident comes in the wake of a recent similar one in which ten people died when a boat capsized near pier beach in Homa-Bay town.

19 passengers were on board the ill-fated vessel from Homa Bay Pier Beach to Ndhuru Beach in Suba North constituency before the boat capsized just about 400 meters from the lakeshore in Homa Bay.

The Parliamentary Committee on national administration and security led by acting chair Ouko Kaunya visited the county on Friday to assess the county’s disaster preparedness in lake transport.

County Commissioner Moses Lilan warned that legal action would be taken against boat operators who ventured into the lake without the requisite training and licensing as well as wearing of life jackets by all the lake users. — NNN-KBC
