Fire Destroys At Least 40 Houses In Guanaja, Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA, Oct 3 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – A massive fire destroyed at least 40 homes and businesses yesterday, on the island of Guanaja, in the Honduran Caribbean.

The local fire department said that, although no fatalities have been confirmed, several people were burned and others were electrocuted.

Residents and boats from neighbouring islands have helped to put out the fire, while several helicopters have flown from the Palmerola airport in Comayagua, to try to douse the flames.

Images broadcast on social networks and local media show how the fire, which began at dawn, devoured the small wooden houses that are situated very close together, a situation that has made it difficult to fight the blaze.

Governor of Islas de La Bahia, Dino Silvestri, told local media that the injured are being transferred to the hospital in the municipality of La Ceiba on the mainland, so as not to saturate the hospital in Roatan.

The fire department reported that, they suspect the fire was caused by a short circuit in a house, but they have not ruled out other possible causes.– NNN-PRENSA LATINA
