ATHENS, Sept 27 (NNN-XINHUA) — A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit the southern Aegean Sea off the island of Crete on Saturday afternoon at 16:11 local time, the Geodynamic Institute of the Athens National Observatory announced.
There are no reports of injuries or extensive material damage, according to early information from local authorities.
The tremor was felt also in the Greek capital, some 300 kilometers away and its epicenter is located in the sea area at 21 kilometers depth.
Greek seismologists revised upwards an earlier estimate by the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which put the magnitude at 6 on the Richter scale. In the second estimate the EMSC gave a 6.4 on the Richter scale. — NNN-XINHUA
