MEXICO CITY, Sept 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stressed that he does not want Mexico to become a “camp of migrants”.
At a press conference at the National Palace, a journalist asked the president about the possibility of the United States granting resources to Mexico to adequately assist migrants at the border.
“Yes, but we must address the bottom, first, we don’t want Mexico to be a camp for migrants,” the president said after the recent wave of migration that has led thousands of people to live in poverty across the northern and southern borders.
He regretted that the US has not invested in Latin America and the Caribbean for decades to support “poor” people.
“We want support for development,” said López Obrador, also hoping that migration policy will change soon.
“And they understand that in the US, they have been sensitive to this proposal,” but they take “a long time” because they must present the proposal to the Senate, and the electoral issues are mixed, he added.
But “there is a very good relationship” with the United States, he assured.
He also asked for support for Haiti and for the United Nations intervention.
“It’s not just about assisting Haitian migrants who leave their country out of necessity and due to violence, something has to be done and here the UN is delaying. It’s the same thing. Where are the international human rights organisations? “he asked.
The region is dealing with a historic migratory flow, with 147,000 undocumented migrants detected in Mexico from January to August, triple that of 2020, and a record 212,000 undocumented arrested in July alone by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP). — NNN-AGENCIES
