BEIRUT, Sept 17 (NNN-NNA) – Visiting Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said yesterday that, WHO will provide emergency support for Lebanon’s health sector, amid the current financial crisis, a statement by Lebanon’s Presidency reported.
“There are serious challenges in Lebanon, most notably the lack of medical, fuel and water supplies, affecting the health conditions of the Lebanese people,” Ghebreyesus said, following his meeting at Baabda Palace with President Michel Aoun.
Ghebreyesus praised Lebanon’s efforts in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, especially when it comes to vaccination. The Middle East country has so far inoculated 30 percent of the population against the virus.
“We will provide support to improve the COVID-19 situation in Lebanon, and assist with other health issues as well,” he said.
For his part, Lebanon’s President, Michel Aoun, called for increased cooperation between the organisation and Lebanon, in light of the financial, economic, health and humanitarian crises facing the country.
Ghebreyesus, leading a delegation, arrived in Lebanon yesterday. The delegation is scheduled to visit several health facilities, to review the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.– NNN-NNA
