BISSAU, Sept 7 (NNN-ANGOP) — The Guinea-Bissau Armed Forces are on standby “indefinitely” in all military units in the country, by orders of the Chief of the General Staff, Biague Na Ntan, following the coup d’état in neighbouring Guinea-Conakry.
The preventive status “indefinitely” decreed after the coup d’état in Guinea-Conakry, presupposes that all soldiers, from general officers to soldiers, remain 24 hours in the barracks, only being able to leave for patrol missions or meetings, with higher orders.
No military personnel is allowed to sleep in their residence during the period of prevention status.
The same military sources also indicated that the orders are for the strengthening of patrolling the borders, especially with Guinea-Conakry, and the streets of cities where there are barracks of the Guinean army.
The preventive state order also encompasses the National Guard and the differences between the Guinean police forces, the military sources said.
Since Saturday morning, the Guinea-Bissau border posts with Guinea-Conakry have been reinforced by Guinean soldiers from the barracks of Gabu (east) and Buba and Quebo (south).
The move follows Saturday’s military coup in neighboring Guinea Conakry, where soldiers detained 83-year-old President Alpha Condé, dissolved elected civilian bodies, suspended the Constitution, and closed the country’s land and air borders. — NNN-ANGOP
