NEW YORK, Sept 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least seven people have died in New York City, according to police, as record-breaking rainfall and flash flooding swept through the area.
New York state governor Kathy Hochul and city mayor Bill de Blasio have declared a state of emergency as the remnants of Storm Ida caused massive flooding in America’s financial and cultural capital.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said New York was “enduring an historic weather event” with “brutal flooding” and “dangerous conditions” on the roads.
Nearly all New York City subway lines were suspended as the remnants of the tropical storm brought torrential rain, the threat of flash floods and tornadoes to parts of the northern mid-Atlantic.
New Jersey also declared a state of emergency in response to Ida.
Five flash-flood emergencies which were issued yesterday evening by the National Weather Service, stretching from Philadelphia through northern New Jersey.
The storm left significant damage in its wake as it travelled from southern Louisiana, where reconnaissance flights have revealed entire communities devastated by winds and floods.
US President Joe Biden is due to travel to Louisiana tomorrow, where Ida left more than a million homes without power.
Tornadoes spawned by the storm ripped through parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, destroying homes.
New Jersey’s Newark Liberty Airport said it resumed “limited flight operations” close to midnight after it had suspended flights due to “severe flooding”.
New York City also experienced flooding, with social media images showing water gushing over subway platforms and trains.
Subway service was “extremely limited” due to the flooding, the Metropolitan Transit Authority said.
The New York City mayor urged people not to go outside.
“Please stay off the streets tonight and let our first responders and emergency services get their work done. If you’re thinking of going outside, don’t. Stay off the subways. Stay off the roads. Don’t drive into these heavy waters. Stay inside”, he said on Twitter.
Storm Ida is expected to continue moving north, where it is expected to bring heavy rainfall to New England, which was hit by a rare tropical storm last month. — NNN-AGENCIES
