COLOMBO, Sept 1 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sri Lanka’s wildlife authorities, said yesterday that, a pair of baby elephants were born at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, outside the central hills of Kandy, in the Central Province.
A spokesman from the orphanage said, the twin elephants were born to an elephant named “Surangi,” local media reported.
Both the baby elephants were males.
The spokesman said, the first baby elephant was born at 4:00 a.m. yesterday, and the second was born at 12:00 p.m. also yesterday.
A senior official of the Wild life Department said, the twin elephant birth was the first such birth in Sri Lanka’s history, among the country’s registered domesticated elephants.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a popular tourist attraction, with the largest herd of captive elephants in the world.– NNN-XINHUA
