LONDON, Aug 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Britain recorded 174 COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, the highest since March 12, and another 30,838 new cases, official data showed.

With 88per cent of the adult population receiving a first vaccine and 77 per cent receiving both doses, Britain lifted nearly all its restrictions in mid-July, allowing people to socialise, travel and return to work in offices.

While many people are still wearing masks and working from home, daily infection rates have started to rise. Daily case numbers in the last seven days are up 13.5 per cent on the week before.

On Monday, there were 31,914 new infections reported and 40 deaths.

Britain has now reported 705 deaths in the last week, up 8.8 per cent. Death rates refer to those people who have died after testing positive for COVID-19 in the last 28 days.

While the daily figures are rising – and Tuesday’s numbers are often high due to delays in reporting fatalities at the weekend – they remain well below the more than 1,000 deaths reported a day at the peaks of the pandemic.

ROME: Italy reported 60 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday, compared with 44 the day before, the health ministry said, while the daily tally of new infections rose to 6,076 from 4,168.

Italy has registered 128,855 deaths linked to COVID-19 since its outbreak emerged in February last year, the second-highest toll in Europe after Britain and the eighth-highest in the world. The country has reported 4.49 million cases to date.

Patients in hospital with COVID-19 – not including those in intensive care – stood at 4,036 on Tuesday, up from 3,928 a day earlier.

There were 46 new admissions to intensive care units, edging up from 45 on Monday. The total number of intensive care patients increased to 504 from a previous 485.

Some 266,246 tests for COVID-19 were carried out in the past day, compared with a previous 101,341, the health ministry said. — NNN-AGENCIES
