KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 (NNN-Bernama) — More than 150 festive events are being held to celebrate Ukraine’s 30th anniversary of independence, Tuesday, both in Ukraine and other countries including in Malaysia.
In a statement, the Ukraine Embassy in Malaysia said that this glorious occasion is being celebrated in style with the theme “Ukraine: You are my only one”, which symbolises the vision of independence as a realised aspiration of many generations of Ukrainians.
Ukraine proclaimed its independence on August 24, 1991, following the collapse of the then Soviet Union.
The key events in the capital city of Kyiv includes the Crimea Summit, the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, as well as the grand military parade hosting heads of states and numerous foreign dignitaries.
There will be also a number of events overseas, including in Malaysia.
Due to strict compliance with the current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), restricting public events and physical gatherings, there will not be any public events by the Ukraine embassy to celebrate the independence anniversary.
“Yet we are glad that for the second consecutive year, one of the most known Malaysian landmark, Menara KL (KL Tower) will be lit in blue and yellow – the colours of the National Flag of Ukraine,” the statement said.
This year, the Alor Star Tower in Kedah state will also join and shine in blue and yellow for the Independence Day of Ukraine.
The statement further said that as part of the global celebration, world renowned landmarks will be lit in Ukrainian colours, such as the Niagara Falls in the United States and Canada, the Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Qutb Minar in India, and many more.
