NEW DELHI, Aug 23 (NNN-PTI) – Three dacoits (bandits) were killed, as police foiled a bank robbery attempt, in India’s north-eastern state of Assam, officials said yesterday.
The incident took place early yesterday, at the village Bhotgaon in Kokrajhar district, about 190 km west of Dispur, the capital city of Assam.
“Yesterday evening police foiled a bank robbery at Chengmari near Bhotgaon in Kokrajhar. Upon being intercepted, the dacoits opened fire on the police. In retaliatory fire by the police, three dacoits from the nearby districts were injured and later succumbed to their injuries,” reads a statement issued by the state’s police chief, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta.
Police also claimed recovery of some material from the spot.
“Vehicles, tools, gas cutters, two pistols, along with oxygen cylinders were recovered,” Mahanta further said.
According to the police, the operation continued until early yesterday.
Local media reports said, two to three robbers managed to escape.– NNN-PTI
