Chileans queue for the vaccine in the capital Santiago
SANTIAGO, Aug 18 (NNN-Xinhua) — Chile reported 405 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, the lowest daily figure since April 2020, for a total of 1,630,330 cases, Health Minister Enrique Paris said.
In the same period, there were also 18 deaths, bringing the total to 36,438.
In a statement, the official said that the COVID-19 positivity rate was 1 percent in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, while in 13 of the country’s 16 regions it was 2 percent or less.
In the last seven days, 11 Chilean regions have registered a decline in COVID-19 cases, although some still show a significant increase.
Chile has reported the lowest number of cases and hospitalizations of the pandemic in recent weeks, with less than 1,000 infections per day, according to the weekly moving average.
Meanwhile, more than 83 percent of the target population (15.2 million people) in the South American country have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. — NNN-XINHUA
