TEHRAN, Aug 18 (NNN-IRNA) – Iran’s President, Ebrahim Raisi, yesterday said, relationship between Iran and Iraq are beyond merely neighbourly relations.
“The nations of Iran and Iraq have common aspirations,” said Raisi, in a telephone conversation with Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi.
“A strong, independent, united, secure and prosperous Iraq is not only our dream, but also an agenda of the two countries, by developing bilateral and regional cooperation,” he was quoted as saying.
Iran supports any initiative that stabilises the situation in Iraq and promotes its role in the region, he said, alluding to an imminent regional summit to be held in Baghdad.
“The interference of foreigners in the affairs of the region is neither helpful for the security and stability, nor a ground for development and progress of the region,” he stressed.
With reference to the war in Yemen, he noted that, everyone should seek to stop the war in Yemen and respect the right of its people “to determine their own destiny.”
For his part, al-Kadhimi said, “Tehran is a real partner for Baghdad and has always been by the side of the Iraqi government and people, in difficult circumstances.”
“The region is witnessing great challenges and solving these issues requires wisdom, patience and cooperation of the countries of the region,” he added.– NNN-IRNA
