SEOUL, Aug 17 (NNN-YONHAP) – South Korea reported 1,373 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight, compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number to 226,854.
The daily caseload was down from 1,556 in the prior day, but it hovered above 1,000 for 42 straight days. The daily average tally for the past week was 1,839.
The recent resurgence was attributable to cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province.
Of the new cases, 361 were Seoul residents and 372 were people residing in Gyeonggi.
The virus spread also raged in the non-metropolitan area. The number of newly infected people in the non-capital region was 513, or 38.8 percent of the total local transmission.
Fifty cases were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figures to 12,919.
Six more deaths were confirmed, bringing the death toll to 2,173. The total fatality rate stood at 0.96 percent.
A total of 1,026 more patients were discharged from quarantine, after making full recovery, pulling up the combined number to 197,224. The total recovery rate was 86.94 percent.
The country has tested over 12.40 million people, among whom 11,557,443 tested negative for the virus and 620,680 are being checked.
Since the mass vaccination was launched on Feb 26, the country has administered COVID-19 vaccines to a total of 23,050,358 people, with 9,996,839 fully vaccinated.– NNN-YONHAP
